What it is Like Being an Author Across Three Genres

Being an author is often described as a calling rather than a career, and I’ve come to realise just how true that is. To write in three genres means stepping into three different worlds, each with its own demands, its own heartbeat, and its own audience waiting to be moved.

I love it. In fact, I live for it. Writing isn’t just something I do it’s the place I go to. It’s my escape, my obsession, and at times my sanctuary. The moment an idea takes root; I feel a pull that is impossible to ignore. Once I begin shaping a manuscript, I’m consumed by it until the story is complete. It’s as if the characters and the plot demand my full attention, whispering at me at odd hours, tugging me away from everyday life until I’ve done them justice on the page.

That intensity, though beautiful, is not without its sacrifices. Writing can be all-consuming, and those closest to me family, friends, partners sometimes have to share me with the imaginary worlds I’m building. Balancing the craft with real life can be a struggle, but it’s a compromise I make willingly, because I know the reward is worth it.

What drives me most is the reader. To publish is not simply to finish a book it’s to offer a piece of myself to others. Every sentence, every twist, every character arc carries my hope that someone will be entertained, moved, or even changed in some way.

Across crime, thrillers, and children’s tales, I want to deliver the very best I can, because those stories are not mine alone once they’re in the hands of readers.

Being an author of three genres means wearing many hats: the disciplined researcher, the relentless plot-weaver, the dreamer of impossible adventures. It can be exhausting, exhilarating, frustrating, and deeply rewarding, often all in the same day. But above all, it’s a privilege. To create stories that outlive the moment of writing them stories that belong as much to the reader as to the writer is, I believe, the greatest reward of all.

I am excited what the future holds, Viper 10, Book 2 in the new crime series of Bob Cox, The Dark Side. And a complete re-vamp of the new children’s books The Adventures of Midge the Mouse, which is very personal to me as I wrote them for my two children many years ago.
